Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi/lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play easily enough.
