Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high, and a few trying for the low.
